Whattup Yall?
UW Music Dept. here for the word on what’s workin and what’s not. Here we take a real good peak at UW music. If you have any friends that doin it with the music, have them holler at the site uwhiphopmusic@gmail.com with an audio track and we’ll review it. Until then we gon start with some familiar sounds and we’ll let you know when we pass on to your hard hittin selection.

What we talkin bout?
We talkin bout lyricism. Do you be killin the track by servin us punchline after punchline? Do you veer off the mainstream flow? What’s original about it?
We talking bout beat selection. Do your beat got soul? Can we feel it? What sounds are you using? Does it work? Does it work for the song? Does it work for you?
We talking bout musical choices. What are you doing with this piece of music? How do we receive the groove?
We talking bout point of the poetry. As a hella good friend of mine says, “Does it pop!” What’s the song say bout the world it comes from and how it affects ours?
Let’s warm ourselves up for the first song ever on this site! Unfortunately, he’s not currently on Wisconsin territory! However, he’s down in the warm weather of Panama. Holler homie!

Artist: Defcee
Song: Crowned (Exhibit A Flip)
Review:

Lyrics: Homie is ON POINT. First, let’s start at the classic but necessary intro to the song. Defcee drops his name and city he’s coming from in the first seconds of the song. These are pretty much the only adlibs in the song. A good outro would of been tight with the long remainder of the beat. But now, not only is his vocabulary already pulling from another galaxy but he also uses rhyme schemes that are almost too complicated to follow. Loved the lines, “my parents barely copped those pampers in a sinch” and “everything under the skin on my arm winter”. Loved the rhyme scheme at “deceptecons lettin on” and when it switches to “cloudbreak”
Beat Choice: For a mixtape track this is an absolutely excellent beat choice. This bangs and nobody really knows the beat too well which means that your audience wont have immediately compared him to the biggest artists that have much better equipment than young artists can afford. It fits well with his voice especially because of the mix.
Music: The engineering seems to be done hella well, props. Other than that, I love his voice at the part “another for my draw, dog”.
Point: Seems to be some good storytelling. Maybe the intro to his memoirs.
